Fairy Cakes

Making some fairy cakes
Ingredients: 100g caster sugar, 100g butter, 100g self raising flour, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon baking powder, pre-heated oven at 170 deg C

Let your children help to make some fairy cakes - and then help eat them of course!

Set out cake cases

Preheat the oven to 170 deg C then let the kids fill a 12 hole baking tray with cake cases

Weigh ingredients

If the children are old enough let them help you weigh out the ingredients or even weigh them themselves. Put the butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl.

Mix butter and sugar

Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Make sure each child gets a good turn at mixing, then maybe finish off yourself

Add eggs and flour

Break 1 egg into the mixing bowl and sift in about 2 tablespoons of flour (from your 100g of flour) with a sieve. Mix together well. If you can, let the kids break the egg in and sift in the flour. Then let them give it a good mix (again you can finish off yourself). Repeat for the second egg and 2 more tablespoons of flour.

Add remaining flour

Sift in the remaining flour and baking powder and mix well

Fill cake cases

Let the kids fill the cake cases with mixture

Bake

Bake in the centre of the oven for 10 - 12 minutes or until the cakes are golden brown on top

Decorate

Once the cakes are out and have cooled you can eat them as they are or let the kids decorate them with icing...
