Large Cakes

Making cakes
Ingredients: 150g caster sugar, 150g butter, 150g self raising flour, 3 eggs. Pre-heated oven 180 deg C

Let your children help to make a cake

Grease cake tin

A 3 egg cake mixture will fit nicely in a 16cm diameter round cake tin. You need to grease the cake tin lightly with butter if it's a non-stick tin or line it with greaseproof paper if it isn't

Weigh ingredients

If the children are old enough let them help you weigh out the ingredients or even weigh them themselves. Put the butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl.

Weigh ingredients

Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Make sure each child gets a good turn at mixing, then maybe finish off yourself

Add eggs and flour

Break 1 egg into the mixing bowl and sift in about 3 -4 tablespoons of flour (from your 150g of flour) with a sieve. Mix together well. If you can, let the kids break the egg in and sift in the flour. Then let them give it a good mix (again you can finish off yourself). Repeat for the second and third eggs adding 3 - 4 more tablespoons of flour with each egg.

Add remaining flour

Sift in the remaining flour and mix well

Fill cake tin

Fill the cake tin with the mixture

Bake

Bake in the centre of the oven for 30 - 40 minutes or until a skewer or knife inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean

Decorate

Once the cake is out of the oven, removed from the tin and cooled you can decorate it. This is often the kids favourite part! You could put jam in the middle and icing sugar on top or make butter icing to put on top
