A Simple Cape

If you need to make costumes for your kids, it doesn’t have to be that hard!  How about a simple cape which can be used for many different kids costumes!  I’ve made one for a Little Women costume for World Book Day, but I’m thinking I can re-use it next year as Sherlock Holmes!

What You Need

For this simple cape all you need is a piece of material big enough for your child, thread and maybe a button!  You could sew this by hand, by machine or using iron on webbing for the hems.  If you’re not bothered about the edges fraying then maybe you don’t need to sew it at all!

Method

All you need to do is cut a semicircle of material which fits your child.  The straight edge will be the top of the cape that goes at their neck and hangs down the front, and the curved edge is the bottom of the cape.

Hem all the edges of the semicircle and then decide how you want it to close.  I’ve used another piece of material and button for the fastening, but you could add some ribbon and tie it together with a bow.

I’ve also added a hood which I sewed onto the outside of the cape (this kept it nice and simple to make).  The hood is two rectangular pieces of material sewn together on two sides, hemmed and then sewn onto the outside of the cape – simple!
